My poor husband wants to have another baby. I, on the other hand, do not. We have been avoiding the topic for a lot of months now. I have been just feeling not so ready here. With my history and newborns, I fail to see the positive aspects of another child...Plus, I'm gettin' up there in ovarian age, it might not be so easy...So we bought a puppy. I know, crazy right? Well, I truly figured it'd be way easier than another kid. I dopily thought: I won't feel so frickin' heartbroken every time he leaves my side, I won't be too attached, I won't feel so responsible for my heart and blood running around outside my body, I won't care if he cries, I'll feed him and walk him and that's that...oh so many reasons why a puppy is easier, and such the smart choice...Well, I was wrong. Dead wrong. Yes, I don't feel so attached to the frickin' thing...it is definitely not of my blood and loins....However, the work involved is waaaaaaaay more difficult...Put it this way, at least a baby shits in diapers...And it's shit that I helped make with mine and my husbands genes...
So I weighed the cons and cons. Here's what I came up with.
Baby: poopie & peepee all over the place
Puppy: poopie & peepee all over the place
Baby: Diaper rashPuppy: poopie & peepee all over the place
Puppy: I wish
Baby:
Puppy: eats two-three times a day
Puppy: slobber
Puppy: gas
Puppy: is there a such thing as puppy colick?
Puppy: loyal & faithful
Puppy: happy licking most of the time
Puppy: money for clothes, wee wee pads, food
Puppy: shreds wee wee pads to pieces (even with shit on it)
Puppy: the Shit dance just makes a frickin’ mess all over the house
Puppy: you still need meds 'cause he's rippin up the place
Let's see...it's a toss up. Did I make a mistake with the puppy or what?

I never thought I wanted another child either. It took my 5 years to "be ready"! I started looking at my daughter and noticed how big she got ;( Maybe one day you'll up and decide that you want another.
As for the dog, no words of wisdom there lol... it'll get better!
Wow. Ok...you might be right. Maybe I should hold off for another year or two.
But they're just so dang cute!
Hey,
I enjoyed your comment over at DotMoms and have had a good chuckle reading your blog.
My husband inaugurated the family policy re: getting a puppy last year: NOT UNTIL EVERYONE IS POTTY TRAINED. At that point, it was just my daughter and I; should I have been offended he didn't just say her name? :-)
awww the puppy will get house broken soon enough (can you tell I want a puppy!!!) But I want another kid too!!!
Hi Janet! Thanks for stopping by my blog! I'm so glad you enjoy it!
As for this puppy thing, I have plenty to say about it because I'm an adoptions counselor at the animal shelter... A lot of people don't think through what having a dog means - even more so with a puppy. I would never be able to get a puppy. The only people that can have time for a puppy are people who work from home - and parents with toddlers are probably way too busy to take on the responsibilities. At our shelter, the adoptions process is thorough and takes 7-10 days. If we let people just walk out with dogs, 80% of them would be returned to us within days or at best weeks. Did you consider adopting an adult dog from a shelter? You still have to housetrain them, but you're not starting from scratch like with a puppy.
I had a dog that I thought I was ready to adopt but I realized very quickly that fostering was a better fit. I am gone way too many hours every day (11.5 with my commute) to have a poor dog at home in her crate. (And I couldn't afford a dog walker yet.) So now she's in a good home with a stay at home mom and two little boys with a fenced in yard.
If you can stick with it, continue to train the dog, and have patience, it'll get better. Here's some info. on the whole eating poop thing. Good luck! :)
